Entertainment and Telemetics, or in short, In-Vehicle Infotainment continues to evolve rapidly. With CeBIT and the Geneva Autoshow around the corner we are bound to see many new innovations, bringing pretty advanced capabilities into the vehicle. In Intel’s Embedded and Communications Group, we continue to make great progress in responding to these new market dynamics with the Intel® Atom™ processorbased solutions. Essentially we are giving the Intel Atom processor a set of wheels, and you’ll be amazed what it can do. A broad set of entertainment, internet connected, and driver assistance features are quickly becoming reality. In advanced development you now see gesture-based commands and truly immersive internet based experiences, and the vast community of Intel architecture based developers and broad set of eco-system solutions allows companies to develop and integrate those new capabilities in record time.
The capabilities of the Atom processors, and the work Intel has done in collaboration with the industry around standards, was coming through loud and clear at CES in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. The chip’s unmatched ability to run at ultra-low power, support high-end HMI graphics interface capabilities, seamlessly integrate and connect to smart phones and just about any x86 platform/application, as well as operate under some extreme temperature conditions, make it a perfect fit for the mobile vehicle. In fact, IVI is perhaps the catalyst that PBS’ MotorWeek describes as “the beginning of a new automotive revolution.” Intel was recently featured in a MotorWeek “Over the Edge” segment , which will post on YouTube in the coming days. At CES we looked at some of the innovative IVI solutions that are coming to the car, including some demos that are compliant with the GENIVIworking group standard for open IVI platforms. What we saw at CES was amazing:
- An infotainment platform from Visteon featuring high end graphics HMI capability, network connectivity, and a wide range of add on consumer applications.
- A Nokia demo (GENIVI 1.0 compliant) that offered seamless integration of smart phones into an IVI system.
- Azentek’s Atlas infotainment system featuring built-in WiFi, voice recognition, GPS navigation, VOIP capabilities, and other user software.
- A Navteq MM platform (GENIVI 1.0 compliant) highlighting what’s possible using a VNC connection standard between mobile and embedded devices.
- And an always connected head unit with navigation, internet access, video, and connected services from Telemetria Technology.
